Today I’m grateful for pajama phone calls with my mom.

I called my mom this morning, shortly after I woke up. I was sitting on my couch in my pajamas drinking coffee. I caught her right before she was about to take a shower. For the record, I offered to call her later if it wasn’t a good time to talk, but she said no, and we chatted. I love that she was in her pajamas too. I didn’t ask if she was drinking coffee or not, but in my mind she was sitting on her couch with a cup of coffee as well. It was almost as good as being together.

I honestly can’t even recall all the things we talked about this morning, but in the blink of an eye, we’d spent an hour and a half on the phone. It was the perfect start to my day.

This wasn’t the first time this week I’d called my mom in my pajamas shortly after waking up. On Tuesday morning I called her while I was still in bed. I’d hit snooze on my alarm about 5 times already and was wishing REALLY HARD that I was mistaken and that it was already Thanksgiving break. Our phone conversation that day was brief, and it started with me saying something to the effect of, “Please remind me that I’m a real grown-up with a real job that I need to go to because I have real bills to pay.” She obliged. The phone call was 50% a means to procrastinate five extra minutes before getting in the shower, and 50% a much-needed pre-holiday pep talk.

I love phone calls with my mom – the 5-minute ones and the hour and a half ones. She can rock a pep talk, a catch-up chat, a verbal trip down memory lane, a therapy session, a heart-to-heart, and just about any request that starts with “Mom, how do I ____?” She really is the best. The only thing better than a phone call with my mom is hanging out with her in person. I’m excited we’ll be doing that in less than a month when I visit my parents for Christmas. We might even get to do it sitting together on the couch, drinking coffee in our pajamas.
