I look forward to this time of year every year. I love the lights, the music, the decorations … everything about the weeks leading up to Christmas seems so exciting and festive. I love the whole season of Advent and the anticipation and sense of waiting associated with it. I love sitting in my dark house at night with only the glow of a Christmas tree to light the room. I love it all.

I really, really wanted to put my Christmas trees up yesterday. That was definitely my plan. I had every intention of decorating. But yesterday came and went and my halls remain undecked. And, I gotta be honest, I’m not sad about it.

Yesterday, instead of decorating, I chose to cook several meals to have in my refrigerator for the week. I chose to cut up fruit and pre-pack my lunches. I chose to lesson plan. I chose to wash my sheets and put all my clean clothes away. I chose to fill my car up with gas, and I chose to go to bed at a decent time.

Yep, adulting won out yesterday. And, when my alarm went off this morning, Monday Morning Karen was mighty thankful for Responsible Sunday Karen. I was more grateful for freshly washed clothes and a fridge full of food than I would have been if my trees were up and my cupboards were bare. Yesterday was not the most fun day of my life, but it sure made today a whole lot easier.

Now, don’t you worry. Christmas decorating will be happening for me very soon. I’m gonna fa-la-la-la-la the heck out of this house before long. And when that happens, I’ll be all about that joy. But for today, I’m going to revel in my undecorated house – the one with the stocked fridge, clean clothes, gassed up car, and calm adult.
