Today I am thankful for video conferencing.

Let me preface this post by saying that Zoom fatigue is a real thing and I think most of us have spent way more time on a computer or device than we’d like to this year. There have been moments this past year when I wanted to throw my computer on the ground and drive over it with my car. I am praying that things stay safe enough that I’m able to continue teaching face-to-face, because online Kindergarten is FAR from ideal. I’m also an extrovert, and nothing replaces the connection of true in-person relationships. So, generally speaking, the whole world of ZOOM is not really my jam.
But, I must admit that there are a few plus sides to this techno-world we find ourselves living in right now. Today was a super busy day for me. In addition to a regular day of teaching, I had a parent-teacher conference before school and a 2 hour NBCT cohort meeting after school. Both meetings were held virtually, and I gotta say, I kind of loved it.

My conference before school ended up being about 15 minutes long. Honestly, had the meeting been in person, it would’ve taken the parent at least 10 minutes to walk from the parking lot to the school entrance , check in at the office, and walk to my classroom. After school, I ZOOMED home (yes, pun intended) immediately after dismissal so that I could attend my cohort meeting from the comfort of my home office. Although I truly do look forward to the day when we can hold meetings like this in person again, it was pretty darn nice to change out of my dress pants into a pair of leggings and have my dog laying at my feet while meeting with colleagues from various schools throughout the district – most of whom were also at home (probably wearing leggings and petting their dogs too). And, when the meeting was over I didn’t have to drive home in the dark.
I long for the day when I can sit around a school library again sharing munchies and working/laughing with dozens of colleagues at a time. I honestly can’t freaking wait for it. But in the meantime I’m pretty darn thankful for the convenience and efficiency of video conferencing.
