Today I’m grateful for a carload of crap.

Okay, okay. It’s not crap. It’s stuff that no longer serves me. I loaded up the back of my car tonight with boxes and garbage bags full of items to be donated. And it’s all headed to Goodwill tomorrow.

I implemented a new rule for myself over the summer. Whenever I got an Amazon box delivered to my house I had to fill the empty box with stuff to be donated. I was rocking this new rule throughout June and July and ended up doing a pretty decent purge of my closet and cupboards. But since the start of the school year I have gotten out of the habit, and have had several Amazon boxes just hanging out in my garage waiting to either be broken down and recycled or filled and taken to Goodwill.

Now it's mportant in this story to note that I’ve been wanting to put my Christmas decorations up since the middle of September. Against all odds, I’ve successfully held out this long. I started to get my holiday boxes out this afternoon to begin the decking of my halls, but I felt a bit convicted when I had to move the empty Amazon boxes in the process. I wasn’t super happy about it, but I decided to delay the Christmas magic a tad longer and declutter a few corners of my house today instead.

Once I started I kind of got on a roll, and before I knew it the entire back of my SUV was full of donations. I am continually baffled at how much stuff I own. I consider myself a pretty simplistic low-maintenance person, and yet somehow I have a house full of stuff and without much effort at all I can fill up multiple boxes of things I no longer need, no longer use, or no longer like.

Although I wasn’t happy when I started to clean and purge today, it actually felt pretty good to get rid of things that no longer serve me. It’s freeing. And I’m sure I’ll enjoy my Christmas decorations all the more when I put them up next weekend in my decluttered house. In the meantime, I’m thankful for my carload of crap, my literal junk in the trunk, which will be long gone from my home by this time tomorrow.
