Today I’m grateful for a Rocco Becht touchdown late in the 4th quarter that gave me permission to go to bed.

I had a very busy day today. There was singing. There were friends. There was a comedy show. I was in several different parts of the valley. It was a go-go-go day. And when I got home about 9 p.m., I was exhausted. I have also been fighting off a head cold for the past several days, so the responsible thing to do would have been to go right to bed.

I did not.

Instead, I turned on the Iowa State football game that I’d recorded. I’d watched them go 7-0 to start the season, but I missed the last 2 games, and now their record was 7-2. I can’t exactly prove that there’s a correlation, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I still kind of can’t believe that I’m someone who follows a football team so closely, but there I was … unwilling to put my exhausted self to bed until I watched the game.

I saw Cincinnati score a touchdown on their opening drive, and then I was out. Hard. I was dead to the world there on my couch. When I woke up, there were less than 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Iowa State was up 20-17. And I woke up just in time to see Rocco Becht save a bad snap and run the ball in for a touchdown. Yes!

I didn’t watch the rest. I felt secure that they’d finish it off and claim the ‘W’ without my supervision, so I went to bed.

Although I missed the vast majority of the game, I’m glad I caught this play. It’s always exciting when the QB runs the ball in himself. And I felt just a bit better going to bed knowing my boys were back on their winning streak.
