Today I’m grateful for the dig.

I had plans this morning and plans this afternoon, both of which I was really looking forward to. So when I woke up this morning still coughing and feeling sick, I was very disappointed. I knew the responsible thing to do was to cancel my plans and take a day to rest and take care of myself. So, begrudgingly, that is what I did. Truth be told, I should have done this several days ago, but it was a busy week, and I pushed through it, and there’s no use in wallowing over that now.

I’ll be honest. I wallowed anyway.

It’s funny to me that I can thoroughly enjoy a lazy Saturday of doing nothing when I choose to have a lazy Saturday of doing nothing. But when it chooses me, as it did today, it’s borderline painful.

So, did I love today? No. But were there moments of goodness within it? Yeah. I just had to dig a little deeper than normal to find them. But they were there. I watched my first Christmas movie of the season. The weather was nice enough I could open my windows. I solved the medium-level NYT Sudoku without any hints. Iowa State beat Utah. Oh, and maybe the most exciting of them all … I used up all the tissues in the ugly tissue box and got to open up the much cuter box of tissues in its place.

Some days are harder than others to see the blessings within. But I’m thankful I dug deep to find a few of them hidden in the midst of my pity party today. And, if I’m really going to get all reflective here, I’m actually thankful for the dig, too. If I’ve learned anything from doing this thankfulness challenge each November, it’s that gratitude is more of a muscle than it is a list. And digging deep on not-so-great days is how I strengthen that muscle.
