Today I’m thankful for broken glass.

Fun fact for y’all: I was voted by the Fort Atkinson High School Class of 1997 as the most likely to become the 1st female president. While I appreciate my classmates’ confidence in 18 year old me, I’m here to tell ya that 41 year old me knows that this is a terrible idea. I hate politics. I don’t know a thing about international affairs. Talking about money frequently ends with me in tears. Social studies has always been my least favorite subject. And, if given the choice between watching the news and watching Wheel of Fortune, well – Pat and Vanna will win every single time. I'm an intelligent, highly-educated person, but I know enough to know that this is not the job for me.
Short of the occasional plea for public education funding, I tend to keep my political views off of social media. I certainly have opinions and values and issues that are important to me – just like anyone else. I just don't air them here. I understand that others do, but I personally don't choose to use social media for that. I tend to skim right on by political posts and I definitely try to steer clear of the assumptions and hatred that so often get spewed in the comments. It seems like a fight waiting to happen, and in typical Enneagram 9 style, I just don’t engage – at least not on this platform.

But regardless of political party or whether anyone agrees or disagrees with what she stands for, something historic happened today. A woman will be our next vice president. And I think both my Republican and Democrat friends alike can agree that this opens the door for lots of little girls to envision themselves as future world leaders. And that’s a big deal.

I’m very thankful that I’m not going to be the first female in the White House. Phew – the pressure is off. Sorry Class of ‘97. Y'all should probably be pretty thankful for this too. But the proverbial glass ceiling got cracked today and I'm not mad that maybe, just maybe, the little girl in my Kindergarten class who asked me at least a dozen times this week who the next president was going to be – maybe she will start to envision herself in that role.
